answers to commonly asked questions about virtual assistance.
What exactly does a Virtual Assistant do?
A VA provides remote support to businesses or professionals, handling tasks like admin work, email management, scheduling, customer service, research, and more. Some VAs specialize in areas like social media, bookkeeping, or executive assistance.
Do I need experience to become a VA
No formal experience is required! Many skills from office jobs, customer service, or even organizing your household can transfer to VA work. Start with what you know, and upskill along the way.
Where do I find my first client?
You can start with freelancing platforms like Upwork, OnlineJobs.ph, Fiverr, and PeoplePerHour. You can also network on LinkedIn, join VA Facebook groups, and offer services to small business owners in your community.
How do I convince clients to hire me when I have no experience?
Showcase what you CAN do. Create a simple portfolio, offer a free trial task, or highlight transferable skills. Clients value reliability, communication, and a can-do attitude over experience alone.
What tools do I need to start?
At a minimum, you need a laptop, reliable internet, and a headset. Depending on your niche, you might use Google Workspace, Trello, Canva, Zoom, and time tracking tools like Clockify or Toggl.
Do I need to register my VA business?
It depends on your long-term plans. If you’re working as a freelancer, you can start without formal registration. But if you plan to scale or offer services to corporations, consider registering as a sole proprietor or business entity.
How much should I charge?
Rates vary based on skills, niche, and experience. Beginners can start at $3–$8 per hour (especially for general admin tasks). Specialized VAs charge $10–$25+ per hour or offer project-based pricing. Research industry standards and charge accordingly.
Can I be a VA even if I’m a full-time mom or student?
Absolutely! Many VAs start as side hustles. You can choose part-time, flexible hours, or project-based work. The key is time management and setting clear boundaries with your clients.
